2021 Engineer of the Year Winner

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Andrew Curran

MIEAust

Andrew grew up on farms in Victoria and New South Wales.  As a young man, he served with the Australian Army for 3 years before joining the NSW Police.  Andrew served 10 years with NSW Pol, including performing duties at the Kings Cross Police Station, Campbelltown Police Station, Major Crime Squad South West, Drug Enforcement Agency and the NSW Special Forces Undercover Branch.

After leaving the police, and as a mature age student with two young children, Andrew earned his Bachelor of Civil/Structural Engineering with Honours at the University of Southern Queensland.  The achievement of his degree was notable as he and his family were required to go into witness protection before he had completed the qualification due to his past undercover work with the NSW Police.  Andrew completed the degree during and after he and his family’s participation in the witness protection program.

Since graduation, Andrew worked for Maunsell Australia, GHD and Kiloran Engineering in Canberra.  Andrew was offered a role in Saudi Arabia and spent the next 8 years in the Middle East managing large infrastructure projects, including experience as a senior team member in the development of mega projects.  These projects included the Almarai Poultry Project, the Jizan Economic City Project, the King Abdullah Financial City Project, the Riyadh Metro Project and the Jeddah Metro Pre PMO Project.

Andrew returned to Australia and moved to Adelaide.  Andrew worked for WGA as a Senior Project Manager.  His projects included the Bend Motorsport Park at Tailem Bend in S.A. where he was the project manager for major works such as the Caravan Park, Specialist Go Kart and Drifting race track, Drag racing strip and significant utilities development.

In February of 2020, Andrew joined the Southern Launch team.  He has the distinct pleasure of developing Australia’s first private launch facility.  The project is technically the most challenging and definitely the most interesting work he has experienced in his life.  Andrew has also commenced a PhD through the University of Southern Queensland.  The research is into the infrastructure requirements associated with the launch of small, mini and mirco rockets.

Andrew has been married for 28 years and is the very proud father of two amazing daughters.
